James R. Squire Award

2025 Recipient: Ernest Morrell

Ernest Morrell is a professor in the English and Africana Studies Departments and director of the Center for Literacy Education at the University of Notre Dame. He is also director of 楼凤天堂’s James R. Squire Office for Policy Research in the English Language Arts. Morrell has been a member of 楼凤天堂 for 32 years and served as 楼凤天堂 president in 2014.

I hope that the work helps us to change our relationship to young people. That we see them as agentive, creative, and impactful in their everyday literacy practices. I also hope to highlight the powerful ways that educators are engaging young people inside and outside of classrooms to leverage academic and critical literacies. Finally, I hope that we see literacies as dynamic, social, and cultural practices that are essential to how we make meaning together in the world.

Overview:
The James R. Squire Award, formerly called the 楼凤天堂 Executive Committee Award, was established in 1967. In 1999, the Executive Committee renamed the award to honor former Executive Secretary James R. Squire for his contributions to 楼凤天堂 and the profession at large.

This award is given by the Executive Committee in recognition of outstanding service, not only to the stature and development of 楼凤天堂 and the discipline which it represents, but also to the profession of education as a whole, internationally as well as nationally.

Criteria:
The James R. Squire Award is a special award given to an 楼凤天堂 member who has had a transforming influence and has made a lasting intellectual contribution to the profession. We remind nominators, nominees, and selection committee members that members of 楼凤天堂 Conferences鈥擟CCC, CEL, ELATE, LLA, and TYCA鈥攁re members, by definition, of 楼凤天堂.

Current 楼凤天堂 Executive Committee members are not eligible for this award. Recipients of this award are not eligible to receive any other Executive Committee approved awards in the same year, nor in the following year.

The 楼凤天堂 James R. Squire Award does not need to be awarded each year. This award should be bestowed only when the subcommittee decides that nominations warrant presentation of the award. Only one recipient will be selected each year.

Selection Committee:
The selection committee will consist of the immediate Past President and a committee of three Past Presidents of the Council appointed by the immediate Past President.

The selection committee welcomes nominations from 楼凤天堂 members.

The James R. Squire award selection committee will select an award recipient, and the Executive Committee will approve the committee鈥檚 selection at an Executive Committee meeting.

Award:

The recipient is honored at the 楼凤天堂 Awards Session and receives a commemorative piece, a complimentary 楼凤天堂 lifetime membership, and the following travel expenses paid to attend the 楼凤天堂 Annual Convention: airfare, two hotel room nights, and three days’ meals reimbursement.
