Public Language Awards Committee
Charge
The Committee will:
- recognize and commend clear and honest language and help students and others identify deceptive language through the study of rhetorical techniques and critical literacy studies;
- identify, address, and promote interest in and knowledge of language used in public spaces;
- promote discussion of public language use;
- provide awareness of public language education;
- uphold these charges in selecting the recipients of the annual George Orwell Award for Distinguished Contribution to Honesty and Clarity in Public Language;
- uphold these charges by creating or updating a guide to studying public language
- uphold these charges by coordinating with Â¥·ïÌìÌà staff on a plan to promote the work of the recipients of the George Orwell Award for Distinguished Contribution to Honesty and Clarity in Public Language.
The Public Language Award Committee administered the Doublespeak Award from 1974 to 2020. The award was sunset in 2022.

- Select the George Orwell Award winner annually
- Select examples of Doublespeak for The Year in Doublespeak
- Assist with the Public Language Committee’s protected session at Annual Convention​
